Maybe you will not be a pro in editing photos with Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom. But when you have a simple default editor in your device why you have to go with these big editors. You may be wondering which editor that I am editing out. Today, I am talking about the default editor which we see in iPhones or iPads. Your iPad or iPhone’s camera can be used to take amazing shots, but wait you can make it better. How right? you can apply a variety of adjustments and effects to live up your snaps using iOS’ dedicated Photos app. The default Photos app that’s baked into iOS has long provided some basic editing tools and a variety of filters for quite a while now.
Editing Photos!
Though this was good enough for users to add some extra beauty to the photos which they have captured on their Apple devices i.e. on iPhones and iPads. However, for more advanced editing or other pro editors may stick with popular third-party editing apps like the Google-owned Snapseed, VSCO, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Lightroom and even some other applications.
The tools you’re likely to use most often are crop-and-rotate and, for portraits, Remove Red-Eye. This Auto-Adjust option is also easier, which gives one tap and it can improve many images. For more control, you will want to get to know about the new adjustment options. Further in Photos, you can manually adjust Light and Colour, and create custom mono conversions. There is also a wide range of photo filter effects, but the real stars of Photos are extensions, which enable it to plug into other apps and add a near-limitless range of new effects and filters.
Now, with the advanced photo editing tools that iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 Photos app brings to it. Mostly you won’t actually need a third-party application like Adobe Photoshop, Snapseed for editing. That much features are Apple is including with the new Photos app. Though Apple has been consistently improved the editing tools with each and every new version of iOS, with the latest IOS 13, they have taken things to a different level. But this time, they’ve taken things to a whole new level. Before getting into editing first let us look at how to capture stunning photos in your devices.
How to capture photos in your IOS running device?
The first and most important step is to open the camera app. Yeah without opening the camera app, you can’t take amazing shots. There are three different ways to open the camera app.
- First From your Home screen, tap on the Camera app
- Second, from your Control Center, swipe up your Control Center, then tap the Camera icon
- Finally from the lock screen, swipe to the left to access the Camera, or just press the Camera icon shown in the lock screen.
Now after opening your camera, capture your moments. Tap on the shutter button to capture amazing shots. There are different modes available while taking photos, you can have a look at them by swiping. While swiping the screen to the left or right, or tap the camera mode labels to choose between time-lapse, slo-mo, video, photo, square, or even pano.
You can also capture live moments, which gives life to a picture i.e. it will record in movement and sound. By default live photos are turned on, however, you can also deactivate by clicking on that “eye” like icon. Once turned off, it will not capture live photos by default. Other options include burst mode, where you can continuously take photos and select the best photo. Now let us have a look into how can we edit the images which we took using the Photos app in IOS.
How to edit images in the Photos app in IOS?
You just read about taking images on an iPhone or iPad. Now let us dig into editing these images in the Photos app. After you finish taking your images, open it in the Photos app and tap on Edit. From this edit menu, you can various options like you can adjust your photo’s size, angle, light, add a filter, and many more. Other editing includes choosing an adjustment, like Brightness or Saturation, and slide to change the strength and intensity of the same. The best thing is that, if you don’t like what you have changed now and wish to go back just tap on Cancel and it will automatically revert back to the original image canceling all edits which you have done. Further, the photo editing tools within the Photos app are neatly categorized under three separate sections, namely Adjustments, Filters, and Cropping.
According to me, this categorization is really useful to make the editing process more simple for all types of users. There are people under many categories who uses a phone. Some may be a noob, the next one wouldn’t be a noob but not pro, and the final category pro users. For pro users, this classification isn’t really useful. Its only for noob peoples this classification is useful. Enough of talking about this history about the photos app, follow the steps which we mention below for changing your picture into a whole new level. We ask apologies from you for not providing any screen records for the pictures since the lack of availability of the device and time.
Now the first step is nothing other than opening up the photos app, select an image that you want to edit yourself.
After finishing selecting the picture, now tap on the edit button which you can find on the top right of the screen to start editing.
Finally, you will enter the editing menu, and here you will notice some icons for the Adjustments, Filters and Cropping section starting from left to right, which you can see at the bottom of your screen. Each and every time when you open the editing menu, the app by default will take you directly to the Adjustments section. The first tool here is called “Auto” which is indicated by a “Magic wand” icon. If you tap on it, the photos app will automatically enhance your photo by using the other tools available. In most scenarios, this option is useful and hence reducing our work of manually editing.
However in some cases, this auto-editing wouldn’t be best, for removing these auto effects, just click on the same icon. Now manually start with your editing, with the tools available in photos app except for that magic icon which is the auto option. There are certain options available in the Photos app, we will talk more in detail about these options. Using these each and every individual editing options you can change your picture into another level.
Coming to the Various Tools available in the Photos app!
Now let us talk in detail about the various options which are available in the default app. There are a hell lot of options which is available and after reading this article I’m sure that you will be a pro in editing images.
Old Options!
Exposure: This is the first manual option that you can see and sits right next to the “magic wand” icon i.e. auto option. Further, this a tool that is even found on the most basic photo editing applications. I think there will be no editing apps without exposure control options. For this, simply use the slider which is seen below to it and with this, you can control the light in your picture. There are two options available i.e. overexpose and under-expose. For over-exposing, the picture you can just drag the slider to the left and for under-exposing just drag it to the right.
Brilliance: This tool sits just right next to the Exposure setting. This option primarily focuses on the darker areas of the picture. You can increase the brilliance using the slider and initially, this will brighten up shadows. This will also adjust the overall contrast of the picture.
Highlights: This is the next tool that you can see in the order. The Highlights tool only focuses on the lighter parts of the image. If you want to make your object look even whiter, just simply drag the slider to the left.
Shadows: You guys have learned three options that are available in the Photos app. The next option which is available is the Shadows option. As the name suggests, this tool only focuses on the shadow options and it can be used for making the darker sections so bright or even much darker. Further, this tool doesn’t affect or doesn’t have any role in the brighter parts of the image.
Contrast: Another common option that we have seen in most of the editing apps. It deals with the contrasts of the images. This option can either make or break your image. What it does is that, while increasing the contrast it brightens up the lighter areas and blackens up the darker areas. Further, if you decrease the contrast, it will result in the image which will appear washed out.
Brightness: The most common and known option for everyone. From the name of the option, you can understand something, yes this increases or decreases the brightness of your image depending on which direction you’re dragging the slider i.e. to the right or left or increasing or decreasing.
Black Point: This tool is one which is similar and works like the Shadow option. This also does the job by adjusting the darker portions of your picture, according to your preference.
Saturation: One of the most important options which the android users change while using Google Camera. This tool is also available for photos app and plays a major role in the beauty of a picture. This tool adjusts the color saturation by increasing or decreasing the intensity of colors present in your image.
Warmth: In some editing apps you may see this tool as “Color Temperature”. As the name suggests it deals with the temperature of colors. Coming to the functionality, for getting a warmer image you can drag the slider to the left. And for a cooler image, drag the slider into the right. Nothing tricky with this option.
New Options!
Vibrance: Most of us, will use this tool for making colors in the picture pop-up without making the image ruin. This is also a tool, which is most used by the Instagram freaks out there. Coming to the functionality of this tool, it primarily adjusts the intensity of colors which appear to be silent at the time of taking this picture, and the aftereffect of this effect is in a decent way.
Tint: This is an option that we have seen in some professional editing apps and we could not see this in default one. The functionality of this is that it controls the color balance in your picture by giving the picture either a greenish or purplish hue look.
Sharpness: Another common option which you can see in most editors. As the name suggests, this option adjusts the overall crispiness aKa sharpness of the image. This also deals with a major role setting in the beauty of a picture.
Definition: This option is one that we haven’t seen on default ones only on pro ones. Coming to the functionality of this tool, it focuses on the edges and borders of the objects in the picture, making it appear more detailed. In other words, it makes the focused object more clearly.
Noise Reduction: One of the most important options why people use Lightroom mobile. Sometimes while taking a picture in poor lighting or ultra low light conditions, you can notice some grains in the darker portions of the image. With this tool, this erases such grains by smoothing out the entire image. However careless use of this option will result in loss of detail, so care while using this option.
Vignette: Coming to the last option which is available in the Photos app. This new setting just simply darkens the corners and edges of the frame and will also give the picture a retro kind of feel.
As said above we said that the IOS 13 brought some new features into the photos app. These new features include the Vibrance, Tint, Sharpness, Definition, Noise Reduction and Vignette. Previously we couldn’t see this option in any default editors. Only we could see in editing apps like Photoshop, Snapseed, and etc. This is why we said that with the latest IOS 13 editing have been much more easier.
So after reading about all the 16 tools, you may have got an idea for editing your picture in the Photos app, or you can do this same thing in other apps too. You can always try the options and set values according to your mindset. Sometimes it may be better than our value. The editing in photos app doesn’t end here, it also comes with a wide range of filters that can be applied to your images. Using filters is much easier compared to editing since editing involves changing the value in each option. Applying filters is easy, as it can be done in one click.
Photos Filters & Editing with Filters on iPhone & iPad
Now let us jump on to filters and talk more about it. It has great capabilities for editing the picture. Editing takes a hell lot of time and needs our concentration for the best results to come in. Even a small change in value will let the picture to look weird. For applying filters tap on the middle icon which indicates by three “overlapping circles” and as soon as you click it will open.
Now you will be entered into the “Filters” section. Here you can play with the filters and select the best ones out there. Talking about the filters, there are a total of ten filters that you can choose from. These filters were also present in the previous IOS versions. But for a change, the new IOS version gives you an option for adjusting the intensity of each and every filter by using the slider which you can see right below these filters.
Photos Image Cropping, Skewing, Mirroring, & Editing
Till these, we talk about editing photos and applying filters. Now let us talk about how to crop your photos and frame them in a much better way compared to the older image. Not just cropping you can also skew and mirror the image too.

Further, there are also several horizontal and vertical skewing tools that help you to skew the image by adjusting the same. Adjusting this isn’t a great task and every one of you can do this. As we said, there is also an option for mirroring the image. For this, you need to tap on the “two-sided arrow” icon which is at the top left corner of your screen. Once clicked it will automatically mirror your image. This feature is useful when we are editing our selfies, as there is no option to mirror selfies by default in the stock camera app. Whereas in the viewfinder you can see the right image but after clicking the stock camera app automatically flips it.
Apart from all these, if you want to crop your image to a specific aspect ratio, simply tap on the rectangular icon which sits right next to the reset button, and from here you can choose a variety of popular aspect ratios including 1:1, 16:9, 4:3 and more other options. For saving these edits which you have done so far is simple. Just tap on ”Done” to end the process and it will save the new picture.
How to Undo & Revert Photo Edits & Image Adjustments on iPhone & iPad
There will be many situations where you need to revert the edit which you had done now. For instance, if your best friend or girlfriend says that the edits don’t look great and you will need to revert back the edits. Don’t worry you can do this by a simple step. For this go to “Edit” and tap on “Revert” which is placed at the bottom-right corner of the screen. After clicking this will automatically revert the image back to its original state i.e. in the unedited state.
This is very much a wrap about the new Photos app in the IOS 13. This can be seen in your new or updated iPhones or iPads. This is a big improvement over its past IOS versions which came with only a few options to edit. Most default editors come with some little basic options to edit with. But the Photos app in IOS 13 is really a step up from all other editors for sure.
Image Editing Features Can also be used to edit in Videos Too!
The features of the new Photos app in IOS 13 doesn’t end with these image editing options. Apart from these, there are a lot of other options available with videos too. The Photos app provides you the more, yes you won’t have seen this on a single photo editor. Currently, these options can be done by only video editors which are out there. For instance, the Adobe Premiere Pro is the best video editor which gives you these options. Thumbs up to Apple for including this in the new update. Each and every single option which we have discussed can also be used in Videos as well. All this can be done from the Photos app!. Amazing isn’t it? Apple has nailed with these features.
This also includes adding filters in videos that we previously used in images. We are sure that no Android phone gets these many editing options in Video editing. We don’t know for what reason does Apple focuses on the Photos app. Anyway concluding this article by once again giving thumbs up to Apple.
